Our protagonist, murder mystery writer Peter Knight, finds himself struggling with writers block while sequestered at a remote cabin. During an electrical storm his characters – a motley crew of archetypal characters from nebulous eras – come to life and proceed to tease, flirt, bicker, and, of course, murder each other. It’s up to Peter to solve the mystery before it’s too late!
This was a community theatre show on a small budget so most of the costumes were rented.
The one look I built was that of our ingenue, Kay. The inspiration for the design included Liesl from The Sound of Music, Laura from The Glass Menagerie, and archival photos of debutante balls.
For this look I designed, draped and assembled the dress and blouse. The biggest challenge was that the actor had sleeve tattoos which needed to be concealed. I ordered pink chiffon for the blouse, but when it was delayed in transit I ended up dying cream coloured curtain lining fabric. I also stitched nude souffle into the sleeves of the blouse to ensure that the actor’s tattoos would be completely concealed while still allowing the blouse to appear somewhat sheer.
